Writing’s three personalities

I read a post on a fellow wordpress blog (http://kimrendfeld.wordpress.com/2011/09/15/creatordevelopercritic/) yesterday about the three personalities a person has when you’re writing. These three personalities are the Creator, the Developer and the Critic. First, give the Creator free rein, this article says, and don’t worry if the first draft is messy. The Developer and Critic will fix that eventually.

I like the description of the three personalities we writers should have. However, I have a hard time, sometimes, keeping the Critic out of the first draft. It’s not that I expect every first draft to be perfect, but I do have problems with letting the creativity have full control. (That’s kind of an oxymoron, though, isn’t it?) Sometimes the words just roll out without, it seems, any thought on my part. Other times, if I accidentally put in a random stray comma, it can completely mess with my thought process and mess with me.

What do you think about the personalities and how they affect your writing?

I'm a lover of writing and books. I graduated from South Dakota State with a master's degree in communications in 2011, the same year I was first published. I'm a wife and mom, and I work in content and digital marketing in South Dakota.
